so, on the eve after the departation of greensboro (aka any UNCG holiday over a day), i decided to celebrate the loss of nearly 75% of my friends at nate's with julie and john watching x-men 2, or X2 if you're hip, cool, and have no shame because you have never read any of the comics... well, needless to say i am still mixed in my response to the movie - so here's another elitest movie review for everyone to enjoy :-)
while x-men 2 is a far superior film to the original x-men movie in nearly every way (it only lacks one line where wolverine refers to professor X as "wheels"), does that mean it necessarily should be considered a "good" movie. just because crap is better than crap, does it mean it doesn't stink any less...? that is the question i have to ask myself when going in comparing anything to it's predeccesor. well, let's try to stay away from that, but keep it in mind...
x-men 2 starts off immediately in the whole, being one of mark's favorite movies. now, if we look at the kind of movies mark thinks are "GREAT!" (tomb raider, tomb raider 2, etc...), then we will know that it sets x-men 2 in a place that few movies could rise out of. but luckily it starts off with a good action sequence on the shoulders of the newest character, nightcrawler. now, out of bias for him being my favorite x-man, ever since x-men the arcade game in 6th grade, they get brownie points in my own little world of criticism. the movie continues with many action sequences that are not nearly long enough, which is dissapointing. a few highlights are the mansion invasion, the lady deathstrike fight, and magneto's escape.
the charachters themselves are nearly all a bit lacking. easy enough to point out, storm's dialogue is corny, and no male who has seen monster's ball or swordfish really wants her saying anything in the first place, but rather repeat her performance that somehow won her an oscar (we won't go there...). then you have cyclops, who in the comics and the cartoons was a real leader, go getter, and most of the time a pretty hard core guy. well, i guess for the movie it's easier to make him useless, easy to beat in a fight, and generally whiney. so this easily earns him the nickname "gaybot" -- enough said. now, there are a plethera of other characters who have horrible dialogue or just general horrible actors playing them (ie styker, rogue). but when the finally tallied, the cart is balanced by hugh jackman, ian mckellan, and that girl who didn't wear any clothes cept for blue body paint (wait... that's not what i meant).
as far as story goes, it had a followable storyline and it was pretty intense. at times corny, but i guess that can be written off to the gods of translating a comic to movie, though this one saves face where others have failed (daredevil). so after blocking the old one from my mind, i realized i DID enjoy x-men 2, though it isn't my favorite movie by a long shot. it was altogether a worthwhile flick, and nothing makes a movie better than good company who don't mind when you make crying noises everytime cyclops opens his mouth...
